Joan Petersen Kelley ’50

Joan Petersen Kelley ’50, July 13, 2011, in Portland. Joan earned a BA from 91²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ in international studies, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and later earned an MA and PhD in psychology from the University of Portland. Her practice in psychology, 1974–98, brought her national recognition as an authority in the use of biofeedback for pain patients. She cofounded the Oregon Academy of Professional Psychology and the School of Professional Psychology at Pacific University. In 1951 she married Craig H. Kelley ’51. They raised a daughter, Sarah, and three sons, Gil, Mark ’78, and Tim. Joan served as an alumni trustee on 91²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ’s board of trustees (1986–90) and as director of the alumni board. Joan travelled the world, visiting Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. She enjoyed concerts by Chamber Music Northwest and shows at the Portland Art Museum, and maintained a passion for politics and murder mysteries. “Her family and many friends will miss Joan’s intelligence, wit, style, and humanity.” Survivors include her children; Craig died in 1972.
