Year One

Take the First Step

Begin your introduction to the creative and enriching worlds of dance and theatre. Take classes in dance tailored to your skill level, and enroll in introductory courses in theatre.

Your first year at 91²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ also includes a yearlong Humanities 110 class. In this signature program, study the breadth of human culture, thought, and history to explore how our past shapes our present-day world. Develop critical thinking and analytical skills that serve as the bedrock of your academic journey.

Year Two

Study On and Off Campus

Enroll in required classes to build a strong foundation for your dance-theatre major, such as Contemporary Dance I: Invention and Design (dance) and Visual Performance Narratives (theatre).

We also encourage our dance-theatre students to study in off-campus programs. Explore new dance and theatre scenes in New York City or Paris. Year Three

Refine Your Analytical and Artistic Skills

Gain confidence in your artistic voice and abilities during your junior year. Enroll in various dance and theatre classes, such as Contemporary Performance or Puppetry and the Performing Object.

Additionally, take the junior qualifying examination for both the dance and theatre departments. For the dance exam, closely analyze dance works and develop choreography. In the theatre exam, study a play and create a proposal for staging it. These exams demonstrate your readiness for your senior year.

Year Four

Showcase Your Growth

During your last year at 91²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ, research and present your senior thesis projects. This culmination of your academic experience showcases your ability to engage with important works in dance and theatre. This unique 91²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ undertaking is not only a celebration of your achievements but also a stepping stone toward a future filled with endless possibilities as a trailblazer in the fields of dance and theatre.

Most dance-theatre students submit two theses, each focused on either dance or theatre. There is also the option to complete a thesis combining dance and theatre elements. Depending on your emphases or areas of interest, you may include a performance or creative component as part of your projects.
